The Life-AIs consortium has received support from the European Union’s prestigious LIFE environmental programme. This consortium brings together two leading technology providers, Fede – the project leader – and Agerpix , along with three major producers: Castillo de Canena , Dominio Fournier bodega of the González Byass Wine Family and Agróptimum.

In the Life-AIs project, Fede joins forces with Agerpix, a digital agronomic service provider specialising in data processing and predictive modelling, to “see” crops by capturing images with 3D cameras and processing them with AI.
The accuracy of the data generated from the valuable visual information makes it possible to monitor the condition of the plantations and to carry out high-precision field treatments and tasks.
Life-AIs: See & Save, allows to know the vigour of the plantation, to obtain harvest forecasts and to detect diseases. All this valuable information facilitates high-precision plantation management based on visual information with excellent detail and temporal resolution that will translate into significant environmental and economic benefits for agricultural enterprises.
Aligning Life-AIs with environmental policies
It is estimated that, during the 54-month duration of the project, Life-AIs will achieve a reduction of 604 tonnes of greenhouse gases. This figure will multiply to a decrease of 3,225 tonnes per year when the technology is implemented on approximately 97,437 hectares.
These reductions translate into savings of up to 43% in plant protection products, up to 20% in fertilisers, up to 31% in fuel and up to 13% in electricity annually.
These environmental achievements demonstrate the full alignment of Life-AIs with the objectives set by the EU Green Deal Farm to fork strategy.
Life-AIs field trials and tests
The Life-AIs consortium will demonstrate the emission reductions and savings of this innovation in vineyard, olive and pistachios plantations in Spain. To this end, trials will be carried out on 150 hectares of crops belonging to the Dominio Fournier vineyards (D.O. Ribera del Duero vineyards, Spain). Castillo de Canena (olive grove, Spain) and Agróptimum (pistachios, Spain).
The Life-AIs trials, which will be supported by the LIFE programme, will show how this digital agronomic solution significantly reduces the environmental impact of agriculture in the high-value crop sector, ensuring quality fruit production,increasing farmers’ profitability and helping to improve agri-food security for society.

The AIs system has been exhibited for the first time to the general public at Agritechnica (Nov. 12-18, Hannover-Germany) as an innovation in the Solutions Hub area at Kubota’s Group stand. This trade fair, a global benchmark in the agricultural machinery sector, is a great technological showcase, attracting more than 445,000 visitors from all over the world.
The AIs system, Bronze Medal Winner in the prestigious SITEVI Innovation Awards 2023. The technology has been exhibited under Kubota’s brand at SITEVI trade fair (28-30 November) in Montpellier (France). These awards are for the most innovative equipment, products, techniques and services presented by exhibitors at the trade fair.
The AIs system has been exhibited as a distinguished innovation at the Kubota stand at SIVAL (Jan. 16-18, Angers-France), a leading French professional event for the specialty crops and horticulture sector that attracts thousands of visitors from more than 55 countries.
The AIs system has been presented at FIMA 2024, a leading fair in the machinery sector for special crops (February 13-17). The AIs system has been exhibited as a module and incorporated into KFAST (Kubota Fede Autonomous Sprayer), which has received the Technical Novelty award.
Presentation of the LIFE-AIs Project at the event “EU-Funding Landscape – overview and hands-on experiences”. This event, hosted by VDMA, was adressed to members with no or small experience who are interested in a first orientation. Dr. Lars T. Berger (Head of Technology and LIFE-AIs Project Director) took part of the block “CEMA's network & EU R&I activities: Lessons learned” to provide an overview about the core of the project and the experience of a SME leading a project funded within the Life Programme.
